Resume Summary

The resume summary is one of the most important sections in a professional resume as it answers the all-important question: “Why should we hire you for this position?” Depending on how well you answer this question, you win or lose the battle - an important battle that unfortunately lasts just 10 seconds.

There are no hard and fast rules on how to write a winning resume summary, but there's a whole strategy on how you can win over the employer through gentle but firm persuasion. This is the strategy that we use here at americanresumes.com and it achieves by far superior results than most other resume services can hope for.

In order to put together the most convincing resume summary, you need to first understand why the employer is hiring and what kind of person they want to hire. You will find this information contained in the job description or advert that the employer will have published for the vacancy. So, by extension, this means that you will need to edit your resume from time to time to suit different employers' requirements. This is how the strategy goes, in seven easy steps.

1. Mirror the Job Title

The starting point is usually reflecting the job title for the position that you are applying for. For instance, if the employer needs an Accountant, stating anything else other than an Accountant in this section will certainly put the employer off and kill his interest. In the modern times when Applicant Tracking Systems are all the rage in filtering out unqualified candidates, using the key word "Accountant" will tell the system that you are what the employer is looking for.

2. State Your Value Proposition

Give your value proposition by once again repeating the job title and paraphrasing the purpose for which the employer is hiring. For instance, if the job description says they need a Finance and Accounting Professional to assist with strategy, budgeting, risk management etc., you could combine point no. i above and this one (ii) and put across something like this:

FINANCE & ACCOUNTING

Finance and Accounting professional experienced in driving organizational growth through leadership in the formulation and implementation of financial strategies, preparation of budgets and forecasts, risk management, and reporting.

3. Demonstrate Experience

Once you've stated above, the employer might want to know where you've done this. Now it's time to throw in your best cards to create something known as "brand positioning". The stronger the brands of the companies that you have worked for, the higher your personal brand will rank in the employer's mind. So, let's throw in the cards:

Professional experience includes serving as Head of Finance with Google Inc., Chief Accountant with Amazon Inc. and Internal Auditor with Safaricom Plc. among other roles.

The above statement tells the employer that Google Inc. trusts your professionalism, and so does Amazon and Safaricom. If such leading brands can trust you, the employer, too, can trust you.

4. Widen your Value Promise

This is where you show the employer that you can deliver even in the other roles that were highlighted in the job description, or other roles that go with Accounting and Finance. You could craft this statement as follows:

Proven experience in raising growth capital through debt and equity, leading high-level business negotiations, ensuring compliance with tax and statutory obligations, as well as developing capacities of finance departments to enhance operational efficiency.

5. Let's Put Together What we Already Have

Now, let's assemble the different sections of our resume summary and see what we get:

FINANCE & ACCOUNTING

Finance and Accounting professional experienced in driving organizational growth through leadership in the formulation and implementation of financial strategies, preparation of budgets and forecasts, risk management, and reporting. Professional experience includes serving as Head of Finance with Google Inc., Chief Accountant with Amazon Inc. and Internal Auditor with Safaricom Plc. among other roles. Proven experience in raising growth capital through debt and equity, leading high-level business negotiations, ensuring compliance with tax and statutory obligations, as well as developing capacities of finance departments to enhance operational efficiency.

6. Adding the Milestones

So far so good. Now let's add a few achievements/milestones to give the employer an idea of the kind of results to expect:

  • Serving as Head of Finance with Google Inc., have worked with heads of departments in preparing departmental and organization-wide annual, quarterly, and monthly budgets and revenue forecasts. Have also increased efficiency is resource use by 5% year on year, which has cumulatively yielded over $120million in cost savings over 3 years' period.
  • As the Chief Accountant with Amazon Inc., effectively managed different accounting operations including Billing, Account Payable and Receivables, cost accounting, inventory, as well as revenue and general ledgers. This was besides preparing financial and management reports to guide executive decision making.
  • As Internal Auditor with Safaricom Plc., coordinated audit cycles, including risk management, systems audit, and forensic audits. This was besides guiding implementation of audit recommendations to strengthen the corporation's financial management framework and guarantee the reliability of financial reports.

7. Let's Compile Everything

When we put everything together, this is the kind of resume summary that we get:

MILESTONES

This now sounds like a good resume summary. There are, however, different approaches to doing this, but the most important thing to remember is that the rest of the resume needs to support the personal brand that you have portrayed in the resume summary.
